After appearing on two albums with Old And New Dreams, saxophonist Dewey Redman belted out this superb leader date with pianist Charles Eubanks, bassist Mark Helias, and drummer Ed Blackwell. His formative experiences playing with Ornette Coleman are evident in the opening “Thren.” So begins a set of six, ending with Charlie Parker’s “Dewey Square.” Along the way, we are treated to an urban sound, particularly in the 10-minute “Love Is.” The music gets progressively more impassioned, peaking in the voluptuous “Turn Over Baby” before smoothing itself over, making for one of ECM’s most swinging sessions.
