Rich Gang: Tha Tour Pt. 1

Released

Rich Gang, in its 2014 incarnation, was a duo of modern hip-hop’s most important architects. Atlanta rappers Young Thug and Rich Homie Quan, both originally scouted by Gucci Mane and signed to his 1017 imprint, eventually found their way into the clutches of rap anti-hero Birdman. They were brought under the umbrella of Cash Money Records and assembled as Rich Gang, a name previously used as an amorphous moniker of the label’s artists as a supergroup, dormant after being used the previous year for one album and a mixtape. Thug and Quan, with minor hits to their name but still relatively unproven, joined their forces for a legendary mixtape of songs that still reverberate in the current consciousness of hip-hop. Thug brought drama and excess to his raps, performing extended techniques by pushing his voice to its limits and sometimes sounding like he was in hysterics. Quan showcased his unmatched melodic ear, inhabiting a space somewhere between singing and rapping, belting out hooks that bury deep into your brain. The group would disband before the tour the mixtape was promoting even happened, and now that Young Thug faces the prospect of decades in prison and Rich Homie Quan has passed away at the age of 34, it’s a guaranteed one and done. The dates were, unfortunately, not locked in.
