This Is A Photograph

Kevin Morby writes about death and the tip-toeing around death better than most. Where Oh My God was a loud voice of anxiety and Sundowner a quiet, haunted acceptance, This Is A Photograph balances both the most sentimental and the most furious songwriting Morby has unleashed in quite some time. The title track and “Rock Bottom” blister with clapping hands and jagged guitars over tight funk tempos, and the dark sexuality of “Five Easy Pieces” feels like a body falling apart.. Yet it also contains the multitudes of “A Random Act of Kindness” and “Bittersweet, TN”, songs that soar and swim, respectively, through clouds of yearning and oceans of romantic regret. When the album’s title repeats itself at the end of “Goodbye To Good Times”, context-changed and 40 minutes later, the effect is as chilling as it is satisfying.
