This (Is What I Wanted to Tell You)

Released

Taking cues from their previous electro deep-dive FLOTUS, This ups Lambchop’s ante by keeping the quiet storm tone but with the addition of a fuller band. Primarily a collaboration between Kurt Wagner and drum wizard Matt McCaughan, this is a groove heavy endeavor with Matt Swanson’s bass and McCaughan’s drumming front and center’d alongside mainstay Tony Crow’s melancholy piano. Songs like “Everything For You” and “Crosswords, or What This Says About You” rank among the funkiest Lambchop songs in a while, while more ambient-leaning “The Lasting Last of You” and the title track ripple with humming reversed backtracks and blaring horns. Narratively Kurt’s vocoder effects start to melt away until we’re left with “Flower,” an unadorned folk epilogue, the first time in a while the band has sounded remotely country. But none of that matters when we move further and further into the future, the brave new world of experimentation forever getting brighter.
