Going out with a flail, a crash and a sense that it all had to be pushed to the limits no matter what anyone else thought, Soft Cell concluded their initial existence with a barnburner of a final album, This Last Night…in Sodom being their most extreme creation yet. If anything liberation from pop chart expectations gave Marc Almond and Dave Ball the impetus to burn even brighter — “Soul Inside” is perhaps their fiercest single, a yearning desire with an overdriven arrangement, but songs like “L’Esqualita” and “Mr. Self Destruct” weren’t very far behind.
