For a brief moment in time, White Magic were both the best and the most promising band in New York City, an assessment that both The Village Voice (RIP) and Time Out (RIP) concurred with. There was a delicate, mystical balance between the trio of pianist Mira Billotte, guitarist Andy Macleod, and drummer Miggy Littleton, creating music that was hypnotic, heartbreaking, and breathtaking. Lamentably, that chemistry was only properly captured on this EP, as soon after Billotte would ditch the band and conspire with her boyfriend at the time, Doug Shaw, plus a bunch of hired hands. Aching folk, careening psychedelia, piano runs that showed Billotte connecting early on to future totem Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou, a heavyweight Nina Simone cover… it’s all here.
