To Those of Earth… And Other Worlds
With 125-plus official albums, many of them testing the limits of musicality and sanity, the catalogue of Sun Ra is daunting to say the very least. If you need an entry point, though, it’s hard to think of a better one than this. Gilles Peterson is not only a world class curator and encylopaedically knowledgable about the far fringes of jazz, but a hard working radio and club DJ, constantly emphasising the craft of context and pacing, and it’s that skillset that he brings to this 34-track collection. It’s not a complete overview by any means – naturally for a DJ set, it focuses heavily on the funkier and more percussion-led sides of Ra’s output, the primitive electronics and dub-like space manipulation, and less on the completely freeform jams – but there’s huge range and radicalism throughout nonetheless, and you will definitely feel like you’re being welcomed into the outer spaceways.
