“Maybe if you stream this song enough times on your phone/it’ll pay for a drone that can take care of all of this.” Satire is dead as hell but Lex Walton knows a horse isn’t dead until you really take the time to beat it well. ULTIMATE LOVE FOREVER is her latest burst of power pop that comes from the same primordial ooze that birthed Mike Krol and Jay Reatard. Only this burst of ooze has evolved into something truly cutting and (ugh) modern and bubbling with more ideas than albums twice its 20 minute length. The clattering dance punk of “USA = FAG NATION” and rage against the substack machine “Yr Op-Ed Won’t Get You Into Heaven Anymore” are, like the rest of the record, timely without being pandering or eye rolling. It bounces from Mount Eerie on estrogen and three cups of coffee to sounding like the bands on DFA that were stridently resistant to the ouroboros of IDM, I love it. You will too.
