Pianist and bandleader Eddie Palmieri was an experimenter from the beginning; his interest in traditional Latin music was always paired with an equal interest in jazz and improvisation. On this 1971 album, he fronts a large band that includes six horns (three trumpets, trombone, tenor and baritone saxes) and at times teams him up with his brother Charlie, playing organ. The rhythms are all of Caribbean origin, but the arrangements and studio effects owe plenty to soul, jazz-rock, and even psychedelia, and the more conventional, dancefloor-friendly tunes are balanced by raucous jams that venture toward free jazz at times, particularly in Palmieri’s own piano solos. The title track and “La Libertad Lógico” are particularly blazing and adventurous.
