Voluptuous Worship of Rapture and Response
When faced with decades of extreme metal to draw from, you can either choose one area to laser focus on or do what Bob Nekrasov (also of the eponymous noise unit) did with Rebel Wizard, which is throw it all into a blender and hit record. The results come out surprisingly coherent: melodic death metal mixed with black metal shrieks, some serious shred, and industrial backline. He calls it heavy negative wizard metal. It’s as good a name as any. These high-speed bursts cover subjects as varied as chakras, alchemy, and getting drunk on the wizdom of unicorn semen. The revelation of such deep universal secrets can cause dizziness, sure, but that’s largely due to the desire this record instills in the listener to grow out a spectacular mane of hair and whip it in circles really fast.
