Waterfalls EP
Plenty of people fuse parts from the various continua of underground sound, but Shy One is unique in her ability to sound treat all music that has blasted out of London’s pirate stations in the past 30-odd years as a single genre. In this 2017 EP you can hear everything from Soul II Soul to the sped-up “Ruff Sound” grime of Novelist, via 4Hero and Shut Up & Dance, FWD>> and Co-Op, UK garage-era bootlegs of American R&B, and vintage junglist rollage: not so much through obvious signifiers or samples, but in a sense of tapping into a single seam of tumbling rhythm, signal tones and subterranean bass. To cap it off, there’s “∞”: a beat-free collaboration with Single White Female into which an old rave riff submerges and emerges, like the slow breath and free-associating cement unconscious of the city itself.
