Woman To Woman

Released

This is a classic Stax album from 1974, a genuine southern-soul deep masterpiece, with the Memphis Horns, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and the rhythm section from Booker T & the MGs all on duty. Brown possessed a powerful, enchanting voice, not a million miles away from Aretha Franklin and while her delivery is often gospel-flavoured, the tales of heartbreak and two-timing contained here are a lot more secular. So you get a series of simmering, bluesy, late-night peans to lost love and heartbreak, exquisitely played and with Brown’s intense and commanding delivery right at the centre.
