After Stiff Records boss Dave Robinson saw British-American comedian Tracy Ullman performing musical skits on TV show Three of a Kind alongside Lenny Henry, he called her up and offered a record deal. A punt that paid off when little over a year later Ullman had scored no less than five top 30 hit singles. “Somewhere between Minnie Mouse and The Supremes” was the Melody Maker’s verdict on Ullman’s debut album, You Broke My Heart In 17 Places, yet beneath the slightly cartoonish chirpiness lies a deep appreciation for classic pop and a copper-bottomed selection of tunes, including the flawless “They Don’t Know,” written by Stiff alumni Kirsty MacColl.
