In 2016 Tennesse psychedelic soul instrumentalists Magic In Threes set out to record a song a week, and the twelve tracks that make up 3 are just some of the fifty-three they eventually released that year. It’s another expertly played and recorded collection of languid, slow-burn soul, lost TV cop show themes and edgy, tripped-out funk. Their particular trick is to blend JBs/Kool & The Gang type 70s funk licks with the type of sophisticated, ambitious arrangements of Isaac Hayes’ Truck Turner/Tough Guys-era soundtracks, but boiled down to 45” single length. Stacked horn riffs, spindly guitar lines, wah-wah and funky snares that cut nicely through the mix all combine, generally at an unhurried pace, to create another album of thematic, dramatic instrumental funky soul.
