Take a virtuoso, Freddie Hubbard-inspired trumpeter and partner him up with a producer out to create a modern Bitches Brew, add multiple keyboardists and bassists (one acoustic, one electric) and one jaw-dropping drummer, and you get one of the most electrifying “fusion” records of the ’90s. Hagans’ horn shoots balls of fire over constantly shifting backdrops that combine almost industrial electronics with drum ’n’ bass rhythms played live, as the bassists, synth players, and on a few tracks, guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel tear into the music with both hands and their teeth.
