Shirley Collins’s credentials as the Grand Dame of UK folk are impeccable. Alongside making some of folk’s cornerstone albums in the 60s and 70s (Folk Roots, New Routes with Davy Graham, Anthems In Eden with sister Dolly, No Roses, New Ballads On Old Lines…), she accompanied Alan Lomax on his fabled song collecting mission in the 50s, recording and preserving blues and Appalachian folk songs that would become key texts for the folk revival that would soon spring up on both sides of the Atlantic. The third album since her unexpected return to music in 2016, Archangel finds Collins — now in her late 80s — delving into songs from both endeavours, her aged vocals finding new meanings and new joy in songs that have been handed down over centuries.
