How does this goddamn thing still throw me for a loop? Eleanor and Matthew Friedberger give it all they got with Blueberry Boat, an exercise in maximum songwriting. No idea too small, no riff unworthy of repetition into disintegration. Like The Who if the magic bus got into a monster truck rally, songs bob and weave, rarely ending where they begin. The title track’s main carnival-like melody stretching out and returning minor keyed, Eleanor’s witty rapid fire prose as infectious as her voice. “My Dog Was Lost But Now He’s Found” and “Straight Street” punching way above their weight, not satisfied with the pop songs buried under their effervescence. Nothing is easy, you don’t get satisfaction for showing up. You put in the work because the Friedbergers did. Perfect for bike rides, trust me on this.
