The maturation of the Odd Future collective has been one of the most fascinating stories to watch unfold of the modern age. Frank Ocean, Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler, The Creator have each evolved beyond youthful provocation to be some of the most thoughtful and exploratory artists in the orbit of hip hop culture, while achieving major success with it. And so it is with Syd (née Syd Tha Kyd). Mind you she’s put in the work, musically. She released four prog-soul albums with The Internet — which she formed while not even out of her teens — so by the time she got to her second solo record she was a seasoned performer, and it shows. She may only be 30, but Broken Hearts Club is archetypal “grown folks music”, tapping into a deep river of R&B that takes in Prince at his most intimate, Sade and Aaliyah among others, but makes that into a sound all its own. The standard of musicianship honed via The Internet gives this a spectacularly weighty sound even as it’s instantly accessible, and the examinations of love from all angles — but especially from the point of view of a sometime player wanting to commit — would make it feel like a concept album, if each song didn’t stand so perfectly on its own.
