CYRM

Fans of Lankum will no doubt recognise the distinct vocals of Radie Peat on the debut album from ØXN. That’s not all CYRM shares with the Dublin new folk outliers, however. Also featuring Lankum producer John ‘Spud’ Murphy, his bandmate in krautrock-influenced outfit Percolator Eleanor Myler, and singer songwriter Katie Kim, ØXN share a similar relish for the grimmer side of folk, spinning their own dark magic from its depths. The focus here is on murder ballads (ideally where it’s the man, rather than the woman, who meets their bloody end), the tales and ghosts within all brought to life with modern musical spells. “The Wife Of Michael Cleary” tells the true story of a 19th century murder from underneath layers and layers of doom-laden synths. “The Feast” is The Wicker Man via John Carpenter, while a 13-minute cover of “Farmer In The City” from Scott Walker’s Tilt draws out even more horror from Walker’s melodrama.
