Baroque violinist Maya Homburger and bassist Barry Guy unpack the music of composer Heinrich Franz Biber as a framework for their improvisational examinations in this blurring-the-category program. Between the Praeludium and final movement of Biber’s Mystery Sonata No. 1, the duo maps its travels in real time. The 17-minute title piece consummates the album’s inner fire. By the end, the through-composed sections feel almost foreign, directing our attention to the sensitivity of the unplanned moments, of which there are many to savor.
