It’s really incredible what the human body can do - take, for instance, Barbatuques. The body percussion repertoire of Barbatuques is impressive: through handclaps, whistles, finger snaps, tap dance, chest beat, and many other organic mechanisms, the group draws a beautiful polyrhythmic picture of Brazilian music culture. Barbatuques are so well-loved that the group has been invited to the stage by a diverse roster of Brazilian music artists - from electronic DJ Alok to the experimental, multi-instrumentalist genius Hermeto Pascoal. In Corpo do Som, Barbatuques presents both original compositions and arrangements of existing songs. As for the original tracks, “Baião Destemperado”, the most famous, sounds somewhat like a fantastic tale from Brazil’s “sertão,” a part of Brazil whose music, storytellers and filmmaking evoke a kind of unique imagery unique to the region. “Onça” is inspired by “boi”, an Afro-Brazilian music culture from Maranhão. Psychedelia enthusiasts will probably enjoy “Num Deu pra Credita” and the 10-minute-long “A Invasão dos Monges.”
