Cowboys From Hell

Certain corners of the Internet whine that Exhorder got to Pantera’s Southern-fried sadism first. Doesn’t matter if they did. When controversy-courting screamer Phil Anselmo, harmonic-pinching virtuoso Darrell “Dimebag” Abbott, and the barroom brawler rhythm section of Rex Brown and Vinnie Paul Abbott made the move to groove, no town was big enough for them to share with anyone else. Their major-label debut crashed into the complacent thrash scene like a motorcycle gang into a Girl Scout jamboree. Great songs litter the record like broken bottles: the title track, “Primal Concrete Sledge,” “Domination,” and especially “Cemetery Gates,” a stairway leading south of heaven.
