Cycles of Spleen
Over the past decade or so (as of 2023) Morocco has become home to a few major electronic festivals, though they mostly sit on the mainstream, Tomorrowland side of things. But in the shadows of Casablanca and Marrakesh’s underground clubs there is a small but exciting experimental scene brewing (many of its producers were featured on this excellent 2022 compilation). Raghoul, which means bass in Amazigh, is one of many small independent labels to emerge over the past few years, and its first release, Cycles Of Spleen by P3RY lives up to the name with its heavy, gooey basslines, from the gloomy dubstep of “Benumbed’’ to the fierce drum’n’bass of “Unleashed.” With his amalgam of murky bass, glitchy electronics, and industrial sounds, P3RY offers a dose of visceral, raw, massive club music.
