Dance was a classic example of what happened when an artist decides to go against the grain of what success they’d already earned – in both positive and negative senses: while it clearly didn’t reach the commercial heights of his previous three albums, Gary Numan showed on Dance he had found ways to translate his approach to often intriguing new sounds. Using members of Japan and Queen as well his core band, Numan created long, mysterious ballads, fractured and strange sonic experiments and otherwise avoided simply doing “Cars” redux.
