Vindsval, the main and only constant member of Blut Aus Nord, describes this metal band as an expression of “bleakly maximalist harmonic unease,” which is one way of describing how he uses fretless guitars. He’s an undersung twister of metal tropes, and this album is a juicy and dark recording of gremlins howling into a long metal tube. The sliding sheets of harmonic stuff (who knows what it is) are crackling and substantial. As metal goes, this isn’t very concerned with being off-putting or aggressive—this is dreamy stuff and I can’t get enough of it.
