A world created with old synths and worn-out cassette players, and which doesn’t indulge in any unwarranted nostalgia or frivolous darkness. The machines Riis has chosen help prevent programming burn and generative waffling. This music has to be figured out and also let go, because the machines demand planning but prevent unnecessary extrapolation. Several pockets here are really deep and gorgeous, unlike anything else in this crowded field. The interruptions and glitches are also so analog that they reminded me how acclimatized I’d become to digital imitations of analog noise.
