Dub Gone Crazy: The Evolution of Dub at King Tubby’s 1975-1977

King Tubby

Recorded

1975–1977

Released

1994

With its welded metallic cover visual, this compilation of early King Tubby dubs has the look and feel of a bomb about to detonate. Its fourteen compiled tracks (featuring dubs made by King Tubby himself or working closely with fellow producers like Prince Jammy, Philip Smart, Scientist and Pat Kelly) couldn’t be more straightforward and effective. Every dub clocks in between 3-4 minutes, with crisp drum and bass work driving each tune, all while Tubby finds chasms between each drum hit to let the sounds bounce around. And like a deep ocean video of a coral reef, each crack teems with life and vibrant wonders. A crucial dub set that captures Tubbys’ never flashy brilliance.
