H to He Who Am the Only One

The third VDGG album was something of a creative breakthrough, featuring one of their most popular songs, “Killer”; it’s about a giant shark who feels sad and lonely because the other fish are afraid of him (because he keeps eating them). Other tracks explore similar themes of alienation, fear and sorrow; “The Emperor In His War Room” is about a tyrannical leader tormented by the spirits of those he’s tortured, while “House With No Door” is about a guy who has trouble making friends. The music is a churning morass of distorted organ, blaring free-jazz saxophones, manic drumming, and somewhere buried in the middle, Hammill’s acoustic guitar. On “The Emperor…”, King Crimson leader Robert Fripp delivers a scorching guest guitar solo, as Hammill really sells the hell out of lines like “Bodies torn by vultures/You are the man whose hands are rank with the smell of death.”
