Natalia Lafourcade’s fifth album followed a tribute to songwriter Agustín Lara, and was her first collection of original music in six years. She co-produced the record with Cachorro López and Leonel García, recording in multiple studios in Mexico, the US, and Argentina. All the songs are about love and relationships, and the album takes the listener on a journey without being a concept record or telling a single story. Musically, it features lush and somewhat retro arrangements somewhat reminiscent of Lana Del Rey’s Ultraviolence: twanging electric guitars paired with strummed acoustic ones, throbbing Fender bass, vibraphone, some strings and horns here and there, and plenty of reverb. Lafourcade was growing as an artist with each album, and this one marked her ascension to the top rank of Latin art-pop, winning both English-language and Latin Grammy awards.
