High Energy
Another great and somewhat overlooked album from the post-Diana Ross Supremes, High Energy is worth the admission price for the title track alone, a plush, elongated disco-soul epic full of wah wah guitar, silky strings and showcasing Susaye Green’s impressive octave range. Influenced by the hugely successful Philly soul sound, there’s plenty of PIR-type Latin percussion, glossy orchestration and massed rhythm sections churning away behind searing lead performances from all three group members. The second half of the album moves away from the dancefloor with a pair of big ballads before finishing on yet another sassy disco-soul outing You’re What’s Missing In My Life, a song featuring some of the loveliest woodwind playing you’ll hear on a soul record.
