High Rise II

Released

High Rise II feels like such a complete vision that it’s hard to believe it was improvised by these Japanese Ballard-loving, anti-drug speed (in the “gotta go fast” sense) freaks. In fact originally called the Psychedelic Speed Freaks, High Rise drew from free jazz, garage rock, and psych to launch an utterly unique brick through the window of rock orthodoxy. Drums mixed back, guitar and bass squall pushed to the front, echoing voice intoning nonsense, it all coalesces into a dizzying 13-minute journey to the center of the mind called “Pop Sicle” that pulls the listener along by their teeth. An essential visit for fans of fuzz.
