In the House
Gilles Peterson’s philosophy of “joining the dots” through anything jazz, funk and soul related means that he has ended up fully immersing himself in any other genre that overlaps into that world – drum’n’bass, dubstep, post-rock, experimental electronica, and naturally house music. On this 2009 double mix CD for house behemoth Defected Records, he blends a basically flawless selection of tracks that show just how much musicianship and exquisitely good vibes the genre has always contained from its very beginnings in Chicago and New York. Legendary names (Ron Trent, Larry Heard, Mike Dunn, Phil Asher just for starters) abound, as ever in Peterson’s sets there’s plenty of funk and disco classics (Earth, Wind & Fire, Chaka Khan, A Taste of Honey) woven in right next to obscure, high tech or radical productions, but it makes total sense all the way. Side note: Defected’s record with their In The House series of bringing non-house heads into the fold is briliant – their Jazzy Jeff edition is another all-timer too.
