Waltz of a Ghetto Fly
The mighty Amp Fiddler must be one of the greatest connectors of the modern era. Sitting in as a keyboardist and vocalist with Prince, Parliament-Funkadelic, Sly and Robbie, Fishbone, King Britt, Vikter Duplaix, Jazzanova, Groove Collective, The Sugarman 3, the Daptone Records collective, playing a pivotal role in Theo Parrish‘s The Unit live band, and not only teaching J Dilla beatmaking on the Akai MPC in the late 80s but then going on to introduce him to Q-Tip, is a mind-bogglingly great CV in its own right. But he was also a monumentally great solo artist too. This 2004 album is neo-soul, it’s deep house, it’s p-funk, it’s R&B, it’s broken beat, but above all that it’s a dazzlingly sensual, charismatic, fun and hook-filled performance by the man himself. An all time classic.
