Her third album from 2022 was a move into new territory. LP8 isn’t the dreamy electro-pop or stately ambientronica of her previous two albums, it’s all about extremes, as demonstrated by the intensity of the opening track Release. It’s made of a pounding jackhammer kick drum, some sharp-edged audio slivers for percussion and a repetitive looping sample of her saying ‘release’. That huge, distorted and relentless kick drum really does set the mood for the rest of the album which is packed with over-driven low end, sub bass, growling bottom frequency and thudding kicks. But it’s not really a dance floor album, this seems to be more about experimenting, pushing each single musical idea to its extreme. It’s not an album, perhaps, for the faint of heart, but in its extremes it achieves clarity: LP8 feels direct, bold, and honest.
