Lost Wisdom Pt. 2
The mythical art of creating a sequel that holds up just as well as its predecessor is treacherous work with rare reward. But Phil Elverum has a habit of navigating the treacherous. A sequel only in execution – songs performed with friend and previous collaborator on Lost Wisdom Julie Doiron – pt. 2 is a continuation of the diary-like ruminations of loss and growth of A Crow Looked at Me and Now Only. The music is warm and dry, with arrangements that warp themselves to the singing rather than the other way around, acoustic and electric strumming with occasional bursts of drums and distorted bass. Patient playing in a half hour flat. Like a good meal had on the road, where you’re able to pause and enjoy somewhere or something new before sitting up and having to get back in the car. You’re changed, sated, and full.
