Londoner J Saul Kane is best known for his Depth Charge records that sample kung fu and other genre movies into rugged hip hop beats powered along with huge dubwise basslines. But he’s excelled at other sounds as well — most notably, starting in 1989, electro under his Octagon Man guise. This is the third OM album, appeared to end the project, but is some of his finest work. It performs that magic trick of having uneven and seemingly disconnected elements all dancing around one another as if all gliding along on an invisible wire. Imagine DJ Stingray but rawer, rustier and slower and you’re part way there, but really this album exists in a space 100% its own. A dystopian funky gem.
