More Than One Thing

It is absolutely right that pianist Nitai Hershkovits — whose endlessly circling melodic lines are front and centre here — also has his name on a couple of ECM Records (as part of Oded Tzur’s quartet). The music is absolutely of a part with the infinitely contemplative interface between jazz, minimalism and new age which ECM have always excelled at. BUT, there is also an underlying groove and modernism here which come from the production and subtle manipulations of Hershkovits’s fellow Israeli, the Stones Throw signed Yuvi Havkin aka Reducer. This is an incredibly beautiful and calming record, but it is never, ever bland, and there is so much freaky detail hidden within that it grows and grows the longer you live with it.
