Not Music

Released

Deeper than its predecessor, Chemical Chords, and recorded during the same sessions, Not Music was a lovely, if understated, way for the Stereolab story to finish. These songs take some time to insinuate themselves – “Supah Jaianto” and “Delugeoisie” are among Stereolab’s most compelling material, but it’s only after a few listens that they really land. “Aelita” feels like a tribute to Broadcast circa Haha Sound; unintentional, surely, but a good indication of the hallucinatory, sky-bound tone of much of Not Music. Remixes from Emperor Machine and Atlas Sound break the flow a little, but they’re easy enough to skip.
