One For The Road

Released

The first of two albums from singer and songwriter Greg Perry was for Holland Dozier Holland’s Hot Wax/Invictus label in 1975. It’s something of a lost and under-rated 70s soul classic, a determinedly non-disco record in the era of the rise of disco. Perry was an accomplished songwriter and the material here is strong as is his delivery, the instrumentation and arrangements. One For The Road is mostly swinging seventies soul grooves with solid rhythm sections, lots of funky guitars and swooping orchestration with Perry’s smooth but impassioned voice floating on top. Why it wasn’t more successful on release remains another of soul music’s mysteries.
