Although many of the artists featured on this compilation may be new to uninitiated ears, most were big stars in pre-revolutionary Iran (and some are to this day). Googoosh for example continues to be the undiscussed “Voice of Iran,” despite efforts by the Islamic regime to silence her. With its funky rhythms, beautiful string arrangements and powerful, dramatic vocals, her hit “Talagh” is classic Googoosh, while the intro of her “Bemoon ta Bemoonam” feels like a poliziesco soundtrack.  Kourosh Yaghmaei is another giant of Iranian music, known for his psychedelic compositions that blended Iranian folk music with influences by the likes of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin; “Gol-e Yakh,” his song on this compilation, is the melancholic ballad that launched his career. One of the highlights of this record has to be Mehrpouya’s “Soul Raga,” an explosion of sparkling sitars, heavy funk rhythms, LSD-tinged organ and wandering flutes.
