These local Boston legends inspired Massachusetts metalcore acts like Overcast, Shadows Fall, and Converge without actually sounding much like them. Similar to Helmet, Only Living Witness took hardcore and sludge (“Slug” evokes Crowbar) and put them in an alt-rock format that made them a little more radio-friendly but got them no play there. Their debut is loaded with songs that should’ve ruled the airwaves – the Sabbath-come-lately title track, surprisingly funky “Voice of Disrepair,” and especially blizzard-bringer “December.”
