Named after an equally subversive, influential Ornette Coleman record, when Swedish punks Refused refused to follow hardcore orthodoxy on their third album they really did reshape the genre (blowing themselves up in the process). Deliberately eschewing the influences of their forebears, they rolled heavy metal, jazz, and mathcore into their politically-charged attack but still infused it with enough attitude that it could be nothing but punk rock – showing just how complacent other practitioners of the art had become and mapping a new way forward. “New Noise,” which ironically went on to be featured in a bunch of movies and video games, still hits like a depth charge.
