The 2020s scene in and around Newcastle in the Northeast of England is quite self-contained, but seems to benefit hugely from relative cultural isolation and a DiY approach, with scenes and sounds cross fertilising healthily. Jayne Dent aka Me Lost Me is case in point. Coming from the folk scene, with eerie and ancient sounding melodies and gorgeous vocal harmony, she has incorporated local jazz and electronic talent in ways that sounds nothing like previous jazz/folk or folktronica iterations. This, her fourth album, is a delirious sci-fi movie of a listen, about “massively multiplayer online dreams,” it’s ritualistic, it’s hallucinatory, it’s funny, it’s dark – and it’s an absolutely breathtaking experience.
