Return of the Boom Bap

Released

KRS-One was the primary creative voice behind Boogie Down Productions for four albums; on this 1993 release, he finally made it official, going “solo” with production assistance from DJ Premier and Kid Capri. He stomps across the landscape, tearing into substandard MCs on “Mortal Thought” and “Stop Frontin’” while delivering furious denunciations of police oppression on “Sound Of Da Police” and “Black Cop.” The most fascinating track, though, is “Outta Here,” which on its chorus advises up-and-coming rappers to remember that it could all go away at any time, but the verses are an introspective, autobiographical story of how he came up from literal homelessness…it’s got more in common with the Minutemen’s “History Lesson Part 2” than anything else in hip-hop.
