A lost classic, Rhythm of Life by guitarist and keyboardist James Mason is a virtuoso slice of mid-seventies hybrid black music. Featuring Narada Michael Walden drumming at the centre of a ridiculously tight rhythm section, it’s a jazz-flecked disco/funk sound that’s augmented by synths giving it a very contemporary feel. Opening track ‘Sweet Power of Your Embrace’ has been a mainstay on underground dance floors since its release. Its synth-funk-jazz fusion was prophetic, predicting the ‘acid jazz’ sound of bands like the Brand New Heavies, Jamiroquai and Incognito fifteen years before they arrived.
