Short and Sweet
An odd and charming excursion for the On-U sound crew, this. Little Annie aka Annie Anxiety is an underground connector to say the least: working with Crass, The Wolfgang Press, Current 93, Coil, Nurse With Wound, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Bim Sherman, CL Stealers, Swans, Kid Congo Powers, Fini Tribe, as well as being an in-house crooner for Adrian Sherwood‘s On-U, making three albums for the label of which this was the second. It came out in 1992, and it is bordering on the Balearic with its approximations to Soul II Soul rhythms from the Tackhead collective of musicians, and urbane purr from Annie. But there’s an industrial edge to Sherwood’s production, and an oddity to the approach all round that — even though it’s very much of its time — puts it out on its own. Nevertheless it remains eminently playable at more disreputable get togethers.
