Songbirds & Roosters
Following the success of his first solo album, Frío, and his turn as one of the main lyricists responsible for Ricky Martin’s self-titled English language debut album, Draco Rosa released Songbirds and Roosters as a way to introduce English speaking audiences to his music. The album features the melodies and instrumentation of his debut Frío, with new lyrics written for each track. Some of the lyrics have closer stories to their counterparts in Frío, like “Rosa María” and “Nymph,” both of which detail all encompassing love and the looming specter of pain. Others, like “Junkie” and “Songbirds and Roosters” depart from their original themes and tell darker tales about drug addiction, existential turmoil, and a fight to survive. Like most of Draco Rosas’s albums, Songbirds and Roosters snakes its way between goth ballads and hard rock flair, revealing the artist’s experimental nature and his knack for creating dark, atmospheric records, uncommon in the Latin rock sphere.
