Between 1995 and his death in 2013, the Italian producer/musician Gianluigi Gasparetti quietly built one of the most intense and beloved catalogues in ambient music. There’s untold sound to discover there, but as an entry point his debut album is a must. The track titles – “Floating Through the Gates of Time,” “The Chamber of Dreams” and so on – really tell you what you need to know: this is formless, mystical, mysterious sound making with a profound sense of the infinite shot through it. It’s simultaneously as dark as the abyss and as comforting as a starry sky, and never gets old because it always reveals new scope and new textures with each listen.
