The Reality of My Surroundings
Released
Los Angeles funk/punk/soul/reggae/metal collective Fishbone render genre divisions as pointless as the divisions between human beings. These multi-disciplinarians’ third set feels undisciplined at first: “Fight the Youth” and “Pressure” bring the Suicidal Tendencies and Bad Brains pain, “Pray to the Junkiemaker” and “Everyday Sunshine” show their roots in Scratch and Sly, weird comedy skits provide segues. Taken as a whole, however, this patchwork quilt proves the possibility of peaceful coexistence – especially when it all culminates in “Sunless Saturday,” an astonishing slice of funk-prog glory that offers a tentative ray of light in a world gone gray.
