One of the most important Los Angeles soul groups to emerge in the late 1960s, The Watts 103rd underwent line-up changes until Together helped to solidify their core players, including bandleader Charles Wright, drummer James Gadson, and bassist Melvin Dunlap. Together is arguably the group’s finest LP, where the Watts 103rd demonstrated their mastery of soul and funk sensibilities on the album’s best songs, including their first hit, “Do Your Thing” and the overlooked Gadson-sung gem, “A Dance, A Kiss, and A Song.”
